Celtic Tattoos - Steeped In Heritage
from:The Celts can be traced back as far as 2000BC. They can claim roots in parts of the sub-continent of India, Asia, Persia and of course Europe.
Since the decline of the Celts, archaeologists and historians have constantly been finding the diversified remnants of their culture—ancient books, religion and the body art that has come to result in the Celtic tattoos which are so popular today.
When the term Celtic tattoos is used, it can both be referring to the ancient body art that seems to have been so popular among the ancient people, or, it could also be referring to the Celtic tattoos of today that are inspired by this artwork. Celtic tattoos convey a mixture of ancient traditions with modern art work.
Celtic Cross Tattoo
Probably one of the most common tattoos that you might see is the Celtic cross tattoo. The Celtic cross first appeared in Europe during the Middle Ages. It used today as a representation of Christian beliefs and can still be seen in many churchyards throughout the Celtic nations of Ireland and The Isle of Man. Originally though the cross was a pagan symbol but adopted into Christianity as the nations themselves responded to the Christian missionaries who fished the Irish sea.
Did You Know? In 1991, the frozen and well preserved body of a Siberian Iceman was discovered in the Alps. The body was over 5,000 years old and had a total of 57 tattoos.
The contemporary Celtic cross tattoo has become a vehicle for displaying another form of Celtic art complex knot work. This intricate knot work is common of all Celtic art, and it can be seen in many of the illustrated manuscripts that have been found in the past. Most of the Celtic tattoos have designs deriving from pictures in these manuscripts.
The Celtic Tree Of Life Tattoo
The Celtic tree of life tattoo was first used by the Celts after Christianity had arrived on their shores. The design has been found in the Book of Kells, as well as carved on stones in Northumberland and Scotland. The tree of life is an idea that is important to Celtic culture, and many Celtic tattoos have come to reflect this significance. Again, the modern tree of life tattoo has drawn its inspiration from ancient Celtic designs.
Other Common Celtic Tattoo Designs
There are lots of different Celtic tattoos, and each design is both distinctive and representational. The beard pullers are yet another common Celtic design. Other popular designs include the Welsh Dragon, The Irish Shamrock and the Manx 3 Legs of Mann.
A Collision Of Tradition And Modernism
Celtic tattoos are truly the best examples of how traditional and ancient designs survive the centuries. While they began as body art and designs, they have come to be modern symbols of ancient traditions.
